With 7 branches currently operating in the Philippines (8th on the way!), Nanyang, a Singaporean café brand, is slowly-but surely growing its footprint in Philippine soil. Specializing in more than just the Singaporean staple- Kopi & Traditional Kaya Toast, Nanyang’s menu features an authentic and eclectic range of savory, spicy, creamy, and sweet food and beverages.
I had a chance to try their classics and favorites at their SM Aura Premier branch in Bonifacio Global City, and here’s my honest review of every plate and bowl served to us that day: (note that $ indicates USD)
Kopi Jelly Milk Tea
- Price: ₱130 / ~ $2.5
- Review: I liked it. It had a distinct taste that sets it apart from the other milk teas I’ve had in Manila. Not too sweet, but not weak either. The homemade coffee jelly and thick cream each played a role in making sure there’s fun and flavor to the drink.
Kayamila in Traditional Toast
- Price: ₱70 ++ / ~ $1.3 ++
- Review: Served with two half-boiled eggs are the perfect pair for your Kopi or Teh. This combination is Nanyang’s best seller. The black liquid around the eggs is dark soy, plus a sprinkle of salt and pepper for a whole bodied flavor to go along with your Kaya Toast. They have a wide variety of Kaya’s, and you can also choose between white or multi-grain bread – make sure you try them all!
Prawn Laksa
- Price: ₱268 / ~ $5.2
- Review: Hands down, one of the best Laksa in town. An instant favorite for me, and a few others in our group. The spiciness doesn’t burn your mouth, but just leaves a right amount of spice that gets better each time you take a sip of the hearty curry broth. Singaporeans, like Filipinos, love spicy dishes, and that I think is wonderful.
Cheesy Chicken Chop Noodle
- Price: ₱238 / ~ $4.6
- Review: I’m not a big fan of dairy products like cheese (like what?) but, that’s the sad truth lol. So as much as I wanted to enjoy this dish wholly, I just couldn’t. I did try the noodles though, because the cheese was only spread over the chicken chops, and I did enjoy it. The noodles wasn’t overcooked, and the presentation was also nice. I think this will be a big hit for the younger crowd, kids, and kids-at-heart 🙂
Homemade Nasi Lemak
- Price: ₱238 / ~ $4.6
- Review: Malaysia’s national and Singapore’s native dish made its way in the Philippines! Nanyang’s take on Nasi Lemak does just the right amount of justice for this renowned dish. It was presented the good ol’ classic way complete with coconut rice, anchovies, boiled eggs, peanuts, crispy chicken, and sambal sauce.
Hainanese Chicken Rice
- Price: ₱268 / ~ $5.2
- Review: Also one of my favorites, the chicken and sauces were prepared beautifully with a cup of fragrant rice. But that’s not all! you’ll also get a cup of soup and bok choy on the side for a complete meal. A heavy meal for everyone looking for a satisfying lunch or dinner. Best paired with Ice Honey Lemon.
Fish Ball Noodle Soup
- Price: ₱198 / ~ $3.8
- Review: A bowl for everyone. This noodle soup is perfect for the rainy days, or if you’re just craving for something warm with noodles. I said a bowl for everyone because you can choose which topping you want aside from fish ball. There’s chicken sausage, fried chicken wing, and luncheon meat.
